This is a famous story from the Japanese classic "Tsuretsuregusa(Essays In Idleness)" published around 1330.
Once upon a time, there lived an expert tree climber.
One day he ordered his apprentice to climb a very tall tree to cut off some branches.
The master said nothing when the man was climbing at a very dangerous height.
It was when the man climbed down to a low, much safer position, that the master gave him a warning; "Pay attention!"
The author of this essay, who was looking on as this happened, asked the master why he gave the man a warning when he was in such a safe place.
"It's in a position of safety that you usually fail. So I drew his attention when he came to a low position," the master replied.
Kenko-hoshi, the author of this essay,was so deeply impressed by the master's comment that he wrote this story down.
高名の木登りといひし男、
人をおきてて、高き木に登(のぼ )せて梢を切らせしに、
いと危ふく見えしほどは言ふこともなくて、下るるときに軒長(のきたけ)ばかりになりて、
「過ちすな。心して下りよ。」 とことばをかけ侍(はべ)りしを、
「かばかりになりては、飛び下るるとも下りなん。いかにかく言ふぞ。」 と申し侍りしかば、
「そのことに候ふ。目くるめき、枝危ふきほどは、己が恐れ侍れば申さず。過ちは、やすきところになりて、必ず つかまつることに 候ふ。」 と言ふ。
あやしき下臈 (げろう)なれども、聖人の戒めにかなへり。鞠も、難きところを蹴出だしてのち、やすく思へば、必ず落つと侍るやらん。 （第一〇九段）
（現代語訳）
木登りの名人と（世間の人々が）呼んだ男が、人に指図をして、高い木に登らせて梢を切らせたところ、たいそう危なく見えたうちは言うこともなくて、
下りるときに軒の高さくらいになって、 「失敗をするな。用心して下りよ。」 とことばをかけましたので、
「このくらいになったら、たとえ飛び下りるとしても下りられるだろう。どうしてそのように言うのか。」 と申しましたところ、
「そのことでございます。目が回り、枝が危ないうちは、自分（本人）が危険を感じていますので（注意は）申しません。
失敗は、易しいところになって、必ずいたしますものでございます。」 と言う。
身分の低い者であるが、（そのことばは）徳の高い人の教えに合っている。
蹴鞠も、難しいところを蹴り出した後、易しいと思うと、必ず落とすとかいうようでございます。
